Vacation home hot water heater
In entry level RVs though, the water heater may only operate in LP gas mode. Water heaters in other motorhomes might operate by a third heating method called Motoraid see more below , which uses waste heat from the motorhome engine to heat the water as you drive. Finally, some high end RVs may have an entirely different system in which the water heater is part of a diesel and electric central heating system, typically either the Aquahot or Hydrohot brand names. These systems are an entirely different animal and will not be discussed here. A few models are advertised as being 16 gallon heaters, but these are actually 10 gallon heaters that superheat the water and then mix cold water at the outlet, making them roughly equivalent to having a 16 gallon heater at the usual degrees. The RV water heater can be operated in either mode or both can be used to speed up the heating process. Both are controlled by a thermostat, so the heater only runs as needed. In LP gas mode, a heater control circuit board insures safe operation, so 12v power is needed for it to operate. Most water heaters have separate thermostats for Electric and LP Gas modes and the two modes are pretty much independent of each other. It requires a fairly substantial amount of electricity, about 12 amps watts , so you may not want to utilize it if power is limited, or if you want to run other high power appliances like an air conditioner or microwave oven at the same time.

Loose water sucks on so many levels. There are two areas where flexible hoses are used. The laundry room for your washer and your water heater. The Natural Handyman has a good posting on Laundry hoses which applies to Water Heater hoses as well. It makes sense in both locations as both your washer and water heater have limited life spans and at some point will need replacement. Both manufacturers are in the business of moving product and not making your life easier.
Probably the best illustration of this is washer commercials. They talk about features, capacity, colors, etc. None of them talk about longevity or only needing one.

Boat Plumbing By Don Casey Boat plumbing is a lot easier for the do-it yourselfer than plumbing at home, mainly because it doesn’t involve rigid pipes running inside solid walls. In fact, pipes are rarely used at all on boats, replaced by easier-to-handle flexible hose or tubing. Here is an overview of a typical on-board water system.
Tanks Because water is heavy, tanks should be mounted low in the boat. Where space is available, it is a relatively simple matter to add extra tanks. Rigid polyethylene tanks are available in hundreds of shapes and sizes, or you might use a flexible bladder tank–essentially a water bag.

I finally found the water heater was loaded with the rubber and found the rubber liner in the sharkbite flex line was deteriorating. I called Sharkbite and they said they changed the liners and if I bought new lines manufactured after that they would have the new liners. That was late or early and now here it is and the lines have deteriorated again. I don’t recommend these and will not be suckered into them again.
After on line research I found it could be the black rubber liner in these connectors that was deteriorating. In deed that was the cause. I removed the hoses and cut them in half and the hot water hose was filled with black gunk. Also some in the cold water but not as bad. SharkBite claims it is caused by hard water and chlorine. Since most of the US has hard water and chlorine it would seem few are safe from deterioration.
I used 2 11” flex hoses and a in line ball valve on my new hot water tank install and it made what might have been a tough job very easy Date published:

Do not use PVC as it softens at too low a temperature causing leaks. When cutting lengthwise, be sure to cut in a single channel for the whole length. Cut the ABS pipe into two lengths, each I picked this width so it would fit between the roof rafters in my attic.
In this video, This Old House plumbing and heating contractor Richard Trethewey explains how to replace a water heater. Steps: 1. Turn off cold-water pipe leading into the water heater. 2. Shut off the gas supply to the heater. 3. Drain water from the heater using a garden hose.
Troubleshooting a Water Heater Overflow As water heaters age, the inside tanks that contain water can weaken from rust and corrosion. This causes the tanks to leak, and in some cases, rupture, dumping the water contained inside the tank. Many municipalities require that homeowners install a hot water heater pan underneath the water heater. The pan prevents the water from spilling onto the floor, but contains a drain line so that the water that leaks into the pan can be safely drained.
You must follow local building codes when installing the drain pan and drain line. Most municipalities require that drain lines empty water into a floor drain or outdoors. Follow local building codes when deciding where to drain any water that drains out of the tank. If you don’t have a floor drain, drain the water into a sump pit.
If the water heater is within 6 inches of the drain, you can use a PVC pipe or a rubber hose for the drain line. If it’s farther than 6 inches, use a rubber hose. A PVC pipe that extends out too far from the water heater can pose a tripping hazard, as well as be at risk from being accidentally damaged. Trace the narrower threaded side of the PVC fitting onto the side of the drain pan to mark the hole you need to cut.
Anything smaller than that won’t allow the pan to drain quickly enough. Hold the fitting while you tighten the nut with a pair of channel lock pliers.

Markus had a constant overheating problem on his Mariner 36 stemming from the connection of his hot water tank in series with the diesel engine heat exchanger. He did a lot of research on-line and ended up connecting his hot water heater in parallel and changing the thermostat. He reports that it solved his problem and the engine achieves normal operating temperature quickly and then stabilizes and he has plenty of hot water.

The correct size for your specific household needs, however, depends on the temperature of the groundwater as well as the flow rate of the hot-water fixtures and appliances showerheads, bathroom sinks, dishwashers, clothes washers, etc. David Chisolm, brand manager for A. This is done by adding up the flow rates of all fixtures and appliances. Typically, each fixture has a flow rate of 2. If your hot water usage areas say, a kitchen and bathroom are on opposite ends of your cabin, it does take a bit for the hot water to move through the long run of pipes.
In that situation, you may want to install two separate water heaters for less water waste and more instant hot water. Including materials gas line, vent pipe, etc. The exact cost will vary according to the length of the new gas line and how much venting is needed. Unlike most tank-style heaters, which last about 10 years, tankless units have an average useful life of 15 to 20 years. While most tankless heaters run on natural gas or propane, electric units are available for point-of-use applications, such as under a kitchen counter.
Just keep in mind that when you turn on the tap, there will be a short delay while the water heats up. Tractor Supply sells a farm animal drinking water trough de-icer that puts out watts. It comes with a metal guard that places it above the plastic bottom of a barrel and the instructions say it is fine for use in plastic. I will just drop that into my 55 gallon barrel on a timer and use gravity it sits up high to supply the pressure to my sink. Anyone out there that can poke holes in this idea? Much appreciated amandabstewart 8 days ago Reply stock tank deicers do not sufficiently heat water Also, they’re thermostatically controlled and only turn on below freezing BeautifulHotmess 11 months ago Hi, am curious to know how your water heater idea worked out?
I built it this way because I like my showers to start warm and be hot when I’m rinsing off. I use a watt inverter. I only use it when I travel now, I mainly use a copper pipe solar water heater on my roof. We keep the water barrel about 3 feet above the sink. Never had an issue and it’s a much simpler setup. How hot does the water get?
I will definitely try your idea out.

Would you like to merge this question into it? MERGE already exists as an alternate of this question. Would you like to make it the primary and merge this question into it? MERGE exists and is an alternate of. Make sure you have a cold shut off on your cold water line before you hook up to the water heater and in some states they require a expansion tank. One good rule of thumb is if you have a check valve somewhere around your water meter or if on a well by your pressure tank then its a good idea to put a expansion tank.
