I would call a toyota dealership and just ask them to quote a replacement to gauge just how far over you are getting bent. The most obvious way to hook up jumper cables incorrectly is to reverse the positive and negative cables at one of the batteries. That will produce a dead short across the good battery. The result should be quite dramatic with lots of arcing, noise, probably some smoke — but the voltage imposed on the rest of the car should be lower than normal, not higher. That said, arcs are weird things and something could have been damaged by arc related voltages. Shorting the battery, and arcing in general, seems like the sort of thing that is both predictable and common enough that you might expect designers to try to protect against transients in a case like this. The protection would be designed into the inputs of sensitive devices. A fuse wouldn’t help here. But, there is no easy way for us to know if such protection was provided, and if it was, if it was designed to handle a case like this.

Make sure the cars are in park, and both cars are turned off and not touching each other before you connect the cables. Actually one of them is already off, or you wouldn’t be in this predicament right? Unplug all accessories from cigarette lighters and power sockets from both cars. All batteries are clearly marked. Wipe off any corrosion.

I don’t know much about engines, but I do understand a bit of electronics, and was wondering if it was possible that he created a huge power surge in the system. We trust the garage to get to the bottom of this, but it seems that everyone thinks it is a starter issue first-hopefully, they find something that we can hang on the first “professional”.
Reverse-connecting a battery could put hundreds and perhaps thousands of amps through the alternator. I would not think it very likely to have damaged the starter motor, but it’s possible some vehicles use a common fusible link for the starter and alternator. It’s also possible that a starter may have an attached flyback diode, such that an attempt to crank the car with a reverse-connected battery would result in the diode passing all the current it can get.
That could fry the starter relay, though I’m not sure the current passed through the flyback diode would compare with the stall current for the starter motor. In any case, the objective of fusible links in some of the highest-current paths isn’t to prevent things from being damaged by excessive current, but merely to reduce not eliminate the likelihood of them bursting into flames.

How to Jump
Many of us do padlock the trailer hitch lever down so it can not be disconnected from the ball. This can also be a good thing to get used to doing as it is a reminder to not forget to snap the lever down onto the ball. But what about securing the hitch extension into the bumper’s receiver? If you just use the original spring snap clip to hold the pin in place, it is rather easy to pull the pin, slide the trailer rearward enough to get the extension out of the receiver and then transfer the extension to a waiting vehicle that has the same commonly used receiver.
To prevent this, I have drilled my extension pin out enough to also accept a padlock bail, as shown in the photo below on the right.
